If an outdoor domestic pet such as a cat wanders into someone’s own property, and the resident dog kills it, would there be legal consequences for dog and owner?

A reader recently contacted us saying she was barely able to save an outdoor cat who had wandered in her garden from her dogs. The cat had a collar, and she and was left wondering what may have happened if she hadn’t intervened on time.

It seems unreasonable to expect most dogs to hold back from going after an unknown cat who wanders in the property, but the law isn’t all that clear when it comes to this kind of situation – and we were left wondering what would happen if the cat’s owner were to take legal acton in case the worst happened.
