Life could have been very different for this little cow; Moonpie the mini heifer was picked up from a livestock auction house at just six or seven weeks old. She should have still been with her mum, but the dogs at Rocky Ridge Refuge, in Arkansas, USA, where she now lives in safety, have made her feel very welcome.
“She accepts them as her buddies,” Janice Wolf, the sanctuary’s founder, told The Dodo about the 12 dogs Moonpie shares her life with. “Babies [are] like that – they don’t know a whole lot about what it’s supposed to be, so they kind of just accept things.”
Around 50 animals are blessed to call Rocky Ridge Refuge their home – although lucky Moonpie got to spend her first few weeks inside the main house, keeping out of the chilly weather.
One of Moonpie’s favourite playmates is Cadbury, an English Bull Terrier puppy. But her first day was spent snuggled up to Spackle, a deaf white EBT with a strong maternal instinct.
Janice told The Dodo, “Spackle loves babies, and immediately became her protector and buddy. She wouldn’t leave that calf’s side. They instantly bonded.”
Soon, Moonpie will be introduced to the other animals at the refuge, including another calf. Whether she will take to them like the dogs, though, remains to been seen!
