Jack Russell/Chihuahua cross waiting for the right home

Twix, a two-year-old Chihuahua and Jack Russell terrier cross, is still looking for a permanent home after spending almost a year in RSPCA care. She arrived at RSPCA Millbrook Animal Centre in Chobham, Surrey, on 24 March last year, following a cruelty investigation earlier in February.

Twix had been taken into care alongside another dog, KitKat. While KitKat has since been rehomed, Twix remains at the centre as staff continue to search for a home that can meet her specific needs.

Since arriving at Millbrook, Twix has settled well in the kennel environment and has shown herself to be an affectionate and intelligent dog. Centre staff say she enjoys human company and quickly forms bonds with people she trusts.

Twix spent around four months in a foster home, where she displayed a playful and loving nature. However, she struggled with anxiety when walked in busy environments, which meant the placement was not suitable long term. She returned to Millbrook so a more appropriate home could be found.

“Despite everything she has been through, Twix remains full of love and enthusiasm”

Inside the home, Twix is described as calm and cuddly. She enjoys playing with toys, particularly chasing a ball, and responds well to training. She currently attends weekly training sessions at the centre and has shown a particular interest in agility and scent work.

Kate MacNeill, Behaviour and Welfare Advisor at Millbrook, said, “Twix is such a loving little dog who just wants to feel safe. She’s affectionate, playful and incredibly clever – but the busy world outside can be too much for her. Inside the home though, she’s a joy to be around.”

When out on walks, Twix can become anxious and may bark at her surroundings and at other dogs. She is not aggressive, but finds busy areas overwhelming. For this reason, she needs a quiet, rural home with access to secluded walking routes and a large, secure garden where she can spend time off lead.

“She isn’t a cafe dog or a busy park dog,” added Kate. “But in the right home – somewhere peaceful with patient, experienced owners – Twix will absolutely thrive and we’re all desperate to see her get her happy ending.”

Twix would be best suited as the only pet. She can live with secondary school-aged children who understand her need for a calm environment. Staff at Millbrook are hoping to find her a home fairly local to the centre, beginning with a foster placement before moving on to adoption to help her settle.

She also has a managed medical condition and requires a prescription diet due to a previous history of urinary crystals, which is currently well controlled.

Kate said, “Despite everything she has been through, Twix remains full of love and enthusiasm. She’s eager to learn, highly motivated by food – especially chicken – and happiest when she’s close to her people enjoying cuddles and playtime!”

Further details about Twix and how to offer her a home are available on her Find a Pet page on the Millbrook website.
