Gary Baxter and Michelle Ballard, co-founders of animal charity DogsnHomes Rescue, have received a Points of Light Award for their work supporting thousands of dogs and cats in war-torn Ukraine.

The husband-and-wife duo have always shared a passion for animals, and founded DogsnHomes Rescue together in 2019 with the aim to rescue dogs in Portugal and the UK, finding them loving homes. With war breaking out in Ukraine the charity, which recently rehomed its 500th dog, shifted its focus on the animal welfare crisis caused by the conflict, as millions of Ukrainians were forced to flee and leave their pets behind.

DogsnHomes Rescue has now delivered over 150,000 kg of pet food, aid and medical supplies for cats and dogs. On one occasion, Gary and his team covered 2,740 miles in six days, delivering 9,000 kg of aid; on return trips, they have helped a number of refugees and their pets travel across Europe and to the UK. One of their missions was documented in our September 2022 issue.

“On behalf of the entire team at DogsnHomes Rescue, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for this recognition”

As well as coordinating a network of rescues and partners to get supplies where they were most needed, DogsnHomes Rescue also took part to a large-scale mobile spay, neuter and microchip campaign. Another spay and neuter mission will start this August.

Upon receiving the award, Gary and Michelle said, “Gary and Michelle said: “Ware immensely honoured and grateful to receive the prestigious Points of Light Award. On behalf of the entire team at DogsnHomes Rescue, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for this recognition. It serves as a testament to our unwavering dedication to rescuing and finding loving homes for countless furry companions.

“We remain committed to our mission and will continue to make a positive impact in the lives of these incredible animals and our local community. We’re also committed to our ongoing support of companion animals in Ukraine. Thank you for this amazing honour.”
