Blue Cross has launched its Critical First Night Christmas appeal following a sustained rise in pet homelessness across the UK. New figures from the charity show that more than 25,000 pets have relied on its rehoming and fostering services over the past five years, as increasing living costs continue to place pressure on pet-owning households.

The charity reports that the number of pets entering its care has continued to climb, with an 18% rise recorded in the last year alone. Many animals arrive in urgent need, with some hungry, injured or requiring immediate veterinary treatment on their first night in Blue Cross care.

Blue Cross Rehoming Operations Manager, Tarryn Twitchett, said, “We’re seeing more pets than ever in need of new homes. As everyday costs rise, many families are feeling the pressure and struggling to afford pet care. The first night an animal comes into our care is the most important, they can be hungry, ill or just in need of a warm comfortable environment. The charity urgently needs donations to help us support pets in our care, from hamsters up to horses.”

Dennis

The charity says the first night is often critical, with teams providing emergency veterinary treatment, food and warmth to stabilise animals and begin their recovery. Staff and volunteers work to support pets through this initial stage before they can move on to fostering or rehoming.

One such case is Dennis, a six-week-old Terrier who arrived at Blue Cross after being found abandoned in a bin. Deaf, partially blind and suffering from painful injuries, Dennis was given emergency treatment after being discovered filthy, frightened and struggling to stand.

Anouska Ashmead-Bartlett, Admissions Coordinator at Blue Cross in Burford, said, “I didn’t expect him to be so small. He fitted in a cat carrier – he was absolutely tiny. I’ve never seen a dog of his age quite so little and thin, and with so many injuries as well.”

Dennis was placed with a Blue Cross foster volunteer, where his wounds gradually healed and his confidence began to grow with daily care and training. Once well enough, he was rehomed and will now spend Christmas in a permanent home.

By donating today, you can help provide a Critical Care Kit, which contains emergency items tailored to each pet’s needs on their first night with the charity, such as pain relief, antibiotics, warm blankets and nutritious food.
People can support Blue Cross by donating £10, £20 or £30, helping rehoming and veterinary teams provide urgent support to pets in need during their most vulnerable hours. For more information, please visit: bluecross.org.uk/christmasappeal.
