Chinese dog rescued after being shot with arrows [Warning: graphic image]

Animal rights activists in China are furious after a dog was shot was arrows by a meat trader and left covered in blood in the street. The dog, which appears to be a Labrador cross, was found by a dog lover named Qiao Wei, who took the animal to seek veterinary treatment.

Two arrows had gone straight through the dog's chest and neck, leaving horrific wounds, but thankfully missing any vital organs. Thanks to the intervention of Qiao Wei, the dog survived and is safe and recovering well.

Pictures of the dog have caused widespread outrage and heartbreak at the treatment of animals in China.

China Rescues and Shelters, the group that shared the pictures, commented, "The suffering of the dog angered millions of animal lovers in China. In the last 12 hours, thousands of people asked about the dog. The dog was also in the prays [sic] of animal lovers around the world.

"China has come [to] a stage to outlaw the dog meat trade, an industry that is socially destabilizing, reputation damaging, and morally repulsive. The dog meat trade is the source of suffering to millions of dogs and tens of millions of animal lovers in China. China can never be a world leader if this barbaric trade is not outlawed."

The as-yet unnamed dog is now being looked after by members of the Qimin Animal Protection Association, a shelter in China currently caring for more than 1000 dogs and cats.
