Stray finds safe place to give birth - on the Moscow Metro

The Monday morning rush hour on the metro in Moscow had some unexpected passengers yesterday, 3 October, when a pregnant stray dog entered a carriage to give birth to her puppies.

Commuters alerted the metro personnel, who came out to find one puppy already delivered and more on the way. Personnel asked the human passengers to leave the train, which was then moved to the peace and quiet of a depot for the safety of the mother dog. In the end, she gave birth to nine healthy puppies.

The Moscow Metro is now appealing on Twitter for new homes for the puppies, once they are old enough. Mum and pups are currently living at the Zoorassvet animal shelter.

The tweet above translates roughly to: "9 puppies were born this afternoon in the train on the Circle Line. Whoever can shelter them call: 499 3216029"

Moscow residents have been deeply moved by the story, and the compassion of metro staff, so it's likely all the puppies will rehomed quickly.
